14 extra minutes

The average time that a Canadian wakes up is 6:43am.  May that be in Halifax, Saskatoon or Victoria.  That is the average.

But by now you should know that just by showing up to any November Project workout, you are beyond anything that can be described as average.  You often find yourself eager to wake up on a Wednesday morning.   When in a past life, you would have just considered Wednesday another hump day in the middle of the week.  Using this day as a refuge to remind you that the weekend is only 2 days away.

But you showed up before 6:43am. Before that Canadian average, before many people are even waking up!  So that, in itself is definitely worth celebrating. And are you starting to get used to that feeling that before 7am, you’ve accomplished so much already?

When you tell your friends about what you did this morning, or try to encourage them to come try it, you talk about waking up for a 6:29am workout, and a typical response is “Who shows up at that time?” “That’s way too early for me” or “Good luck getting me out of bed for that”  or the all time fan-favourite “I’m not a morning person”.

We have come to believe that there is actually no such thing as a morning person. Some people are just really good at finding a reason to do above-average things in the morning. It’s always hard to wake up, but when there is enough motivation in the reason you are waking up, you just do it. Here are 5 things that we have noticed about members who maybe don’t consider themselves morning people but continue to go beyond the average.

  • Members arriving 20 minutes early to be the first to welcome, hug, high five new and old members alike (or actually come at the very last minute and show up just before the bounce- this is still awesome)
  • Usually, actually every Wednesday now, the RCMP officers are that much nicer and smilier.  They love us and it’s no secret #tribegoals. How often do you have such positive interactions with an RCMP officer?
  • Strangers become friends after the simple act of bouncing up and down
  • Everyone who shows up, is woken up originally by their alarm, but once arriving at the hill, there is a wave of intensity, mixed with love and a dash of quirky and you have yourself a bake off.
  • SMILES, SMILES, laughing, sweat, a couple tears here and there occasionally

So yes, you weren’t a morning person, but you decided to show up. And somehow, unintentionally and with some difficult wake ups, you became that crazy morning person. You still may show up with a sleepy and perhaps even grumpy face, and you may think you can’t handle the upbeat energy of others at that hour of the day, but it’s hard to leave without a smile on your face. So new morning person, own it, flaunt it.  You earned it.  You are far from average.  You just started your day 14 minutes earlier than the average Canadian even woke up. And you have likely filled someone else’s day with happiness because you showed up and gave them a smile.

Fourteen extra minutes- that’s 14 more minutes of friendships, coffee time, high fives, squat jumps and maybe burpees.  So for this Wednesday and the Wednesdays to come, here’s to beating the average by 14 minutes.

And also here’s to bringing soles together,
