IWD Feature: Ruth in Miri

We wrap up our travels around the globe for International Women’s Day/Women’s History Month (US) in Miri with Ruth (she/her). Ruth gathers her NP crew together each week and continues the values that were important to her when she started showing up: creating a space for all people and all abilities to participate in fitness and receive encouragement from each other along the way.

All smiles for yearbook photo day.
  • Who are some of the women in the world of running/sport that you look up to?

Lindy!

  • When did you first #JustShowUp to NP? How did you come across NP? What is it that you were looking for in a fitness group? How did NP provide that? What was an “extra” that NP has that you found value in?

6 years ago I heard about NP MAL from my sister, who told me that her colleague goes to this fitness thing early in the morning – rain or shine. NP gives me consistency, encouragement, grows & improves & sustains fitness. The positivity vibes and each level of fitness is accepted.

  • What apprehensions did you have as you considered coming for the first time? What was your first impression? Why did you keep showing up?

I worried my fitness level was not at par with NP’er’s. But my first impression was Wow! – everyone is up and bouncing in the early morning.. that’s hardly seen anywhere.. at 515am! Screaming at the top of your lungs! It’s community, an accessible fitness to every level & perks is its FREE.

Yoga? Why not!
  • What does it mean to you to be a woman Co-leader? What does it mean to your community? What does it mean to our global community?

#ElevateHer #EmbraceEquity together. By embracing equity, we progress towards equality – let’s make a difference today.

  • How does being a woman influence your leadership? What was it like to be a woman in your community before you stepped into leadership?

Gender equality is an area where we have seen a great deal of change across generations, but where there remains much room for progress. A society where there is greater gender equality is one in which everyone can thrive.

  • Did you have any apprehensions to lead this group? Did you experience imposter syndrome when you were asked to lead?

My apprehensions were that I don’t have that boom voice. I’m small in size. The commitment of #ShowingUp every Wed & Fri was a lot.

  • How do you celebrate International Women’s Day? How can others celebrate you or celebrate with you this day? How can we celebrate you all year long?

A run? 8.03km? Continue to shine on, not just on Women’s Day but every single day.

  • What else do you want people reading this to know? About being a woman in leadership or anything else you’d like to share.

#StepUP

All smiles in Miri.
