Trevor and I have been excited for the NP loves AZ challenge since we started it, but we haven’t seen the tribe get so excited about it until we mentioned that this month’s NP loves AZ challenge would involve BEER. If you weren’t there for the awesome Race Man Meets Hype Man workout not only did you miss out on a really good workout, but you also missed seeing the tribe jump for the joy at the thought of beer.

So as you probably guessed. This month’s NP loves AZ challenge is local breweries. Trevor and I are well aware that there any more than 70 breweries in Arizona to choose from and that this list may seem limiting, but we determined that we might just have to do a second round of breweries. So sit tight. You’re favorites might be on the next go around. Or go. We just want you out there supporting local business.
Without further ado, the breweries in this month’s challenge are:
Papago Brewery
7107 E. McDowell Road
Scottsdale, Arizona 85257
How could we not put the Brewery with our namesake on the list. Plus, it is literally down the street from the workout so you can rehydrate there after the workout! Papago Brewery opened in 2001 as a bottle shop, home-brew supple store, and a tracking room and over the years has evolved into a full service restaurant. They have 30 beers on tap and the cool thing is that when the keg runs out they replace it with another entirely different brew. So as they say you won’t see the same line up twice. They also have a boat load of bottled beers to choose from and I would dare say one of the most diverse selections in the valley. Plus, they have games.
Wren House
2125 N 24th Street
Phoenix AZ 85008
Their website says there are located in a property that they say has sat unoccupied for DECADES! I love that they saw beauty in something that had been looked over by so many for so long. They say they fell in love with the character of the building. The old guest house in the back and the garage are the brewhouse and as you can probably guess they built the house into the taproom.
They’ve been open just over a year now and they did some pretty cool stuff for the celebration including make some pretty epic special edition beers that I would bet are still available. One of which, Who Hit John, name was inspired from the old Western slang for a strong whisky, is an imperial porter that has been aged for a year in a honey whisky barrel. Cool.
Turns our that we at NP Phoenix have a lot in common with Wren House (per their mission statement). We wanted to take different workout styles and integrate them with Arizona character just like Wren house wanted to integrate international beer style with Arizona character. We also both believe in bringing people together to gather and get to know one another. Their owner was quoted saying “We want to connect Phoenix together as a community.” Umm….sweet. Same here!
Heads up. There is no food at Wren house, but you can bring your own or have food deliver while there.
North Mountain Brewery
522 E Dunlap Ave
Phoenix, AZ 85020
Like the other breweries on this list they are locally owned and operated; however, this one is also one of two family run breweries on the list along with Huss Brewery. North Mountain Brewery was founded by a Phoenix area native who shares a passion for the Arizona desert culture and the are of craft-beer brewing. Their walls are decorated as an homage to the history of brewing and how the creating of beer has brought many societies together to create a sense of “community.” Yet again, we share the same sentiment of community.
Huss Brewery
1520 W Mineral Rd,
Tempe, AZ 85283
100 East Camelback Road #160,
Phoenix, AZ 85012
Huss is awesome. If you haven’t been there, you should absolutely make and effort to check this place out. They have some seriously awesome beer, great vibes, and YOGA! Check them out for yoga or beer or both. They just opened a new location in Central Phoenix that just happens to be across the street from Practical Art. I’m thinking the pre or post gaming for this month’s Charity Pie Night might have to take place here. Then everybody wins! Yay!
The Tempe location has 20 revolving handles with the beers made on sight. The new location features Huss and Papago brews. Turns out they acquired the rights to the Papago brand brews last year. Who knew?
Like Wren House, the Tempe location does not have food, but you can bring your own or order in.
Phoenix Ale Brewery
3002 E Washington St, Phoenix, AZ 85034
We didn’t originally have these guys on the list, but we really appreciated Dean’s excitement and have made a last minute addition to the list. We aren’t surprised that Dean ran to this Brewery as a) they brew some really awesome beers here and b) it’s the closest brewery to Dean’s j.o.b. (and Trevors). Added bonus to the bonus is that they also have two locations with their original taproom and their new Central Phoenix location that is a collaboration to celebrate craft beer and food.
Like NP Phoenix, one of their founders spent most of his life in the Pacific Northwest before transplanting to Phoenix.
Wisconsin Notes:
- Charlie! Charlie! Charlie!
- JOSHUA TREE COLLISION COURSE with NPSD and NP LAX. Be there. We want to bring a good showing from Phoenix. The other tribes are talking 4o -50 people so we need people to get excited about this. Camping. Racing. Joshua Tree. Trevor’s Birthday. Please sign up on the event page Trevor created or let us know you are interested.
- Monday Morning Hill Location Change – August Location. Drive north on 22nd Street from Lincoln until the road ends. There is a trail head there. Park on the street. 6 am.
Enjoy this month’s challenge. Don’t forget to #NPlovesAZ on Instagram (or on Facebook if your don’t have IG)
Take and Uber or bring a driver.
Points are for visiting the location so even if you don’t partake in having a beer you get points for just showing up to choose local.
Peace, love and cacti,
Jackie
