NP Magic (LAX)

You know that magic feeling when you first start getting really into NP, and you can’t believe how positive everyone is and how much fun stuff we do and waking up early is soooo worth it because you spend your week looking forward to Wednesday and Friday??? It’s the best! And then, little by little, you began to get used to November Project, and even though the magic is still there, you don’t feel it as much. You might roll out of bed, grumble about how early it is, not pay attention when the newbies are singing their names, half-ass the bounce, crush the workout because it’s second-nature by now, and head off to the rest of your life. Maybe you’re not even reading the blog (!!!!!!!!!!!!). You’re taking your tribemates and November Project for granted. I don’t blame you; I’ve been there.

Monday night I got the opportunity to ride in a spin class with 30 of you guys, and the magic came rushing back to me all at once. For the past five months I’ve had to be creative with my workouts, and most of the time that meant exercising alone. As time went on I minded the solo workouts less and less. I didn’t feel bad that I couldn’t run trail repeats with you guys because I knew I could go on a bike ride later. I tried to convince myself that now I could truly “focus” during my workouts and could go harder. I forgot what exactly it felt like to push right next to you guys and feel the pain along with you and be fueled by everyone’s energy. There’s nothing quite like riding in a spin class with 30 people hooting and hollering and dancing and singing and just being all around rambunctious while destroying it on the bike. I was stronger than I am alone, and it was a million times more fun. I didn’t even realize how badly I needed to be next to you all again.
Today I got to do PR Day with our tribe, and this smile’s not coming off my face for a long time. Every cheer, every high-five, and every person who inspires by example as they lay it all out on the course is crucial in keeping the magic going. If there’s no other silver lining to being injured, at least for right now I’m not taking the magic for granted anymore. You are not ordinary if you pull yourself out of bed at an ungodly hour twice a week, you are not ordinary if you put your passion into a free fitness group, you are not ordinary if you don’t mind hugging a sweaty stranger, and you are not ordinary if you celebrate another’s PR like it’s your own. Try not to let yourself take this wild bunch of decidedly un-ordinary people for granted. Don’t take yourself for granted either; you are someone else’s November Project magic.
