10:05pm Tuesday night, bed time, I’m pumped for tomorrow. I have to wake up in less than 8 hrs. Good thing I’m sleeping in my workout clothes, gives me an extra 2.5minutes of sleep.
3:30am Am I late? Did I miss it? Okay got back to sleep.
5:45am alarm goes off
5:46am alarm goes off
5:47am alarm goes off
5:55am dressed and ready to roll out
5:55am helmet on and ready to hit the road
6:00am on route to the hill
6:05am still on route
6:13am see two women run by me repping NP #grassrootsgear, give them a little hooting and hollering
6:16am cross the road make it to the hill, sun is shining bright off the parliament buildings
6:17am hug Lauren and Liz
6:20am become a feature of Stephen’s insta story
6:21am try to guess the people running up to the flame based on their gait from far away
6:25am crew rolls on in
6:27am I am surrounded by 60 other accountable humans
6:28am Anticipation of the bounce begins
6:29am We BOUNCE, we yell, we gather the attention of everyone in the area, we say #fuckyeah cause it’s a good morning
6:30am workout is declared, it’s a Roll of the dice today
6:32 workout is explained in greater detail, Liz speaking really quickly and most people wondering what she says because she’s laughing excitedly, but they know they’ll catch on as we go. She demos a couple things even more excitedly and then we go.
6:37am my legs, my legs, my legs
6:38am high five
6:39am high five again
6:40am more high fives
6:41am holy shit I’m sweating
6:42am I hear people cheering my name as I keep on running
6:43am I see two runners join in, because we must look pretty cool and look like we’re having fun
6:50am Pat is always ahead of me, I’m really got to keep ….hmmmm….ohhhh HIGH FIVE
6:52am people are getting loud, we’re probably going to hear the sound of the clock go off soon
6:54am I thought the workout was almost done, I need to breathe, why are my legs not working
6:55am My tribe members are encouraging me to go a bit faster, just keep moving
6:55am okay I lied, I’ve got a little more in me, I can do this
6:57am I see everyone making their way to stairs for the last roll of the dice, what will it be? LUNGES, SO MANY LUNGES
6:58am BRING ER HOME
6:59am only 15 seconds to go, keep moving, keep lunging
7:00am clock strikes and bells go off, workout down, I collapse over my knees to catch my breath
7:01am sweaty hugs
7:01am wow that guy was really sweaty, (wipe sweat off my hand a little before hugging the next stranger)
7:02am group photo. SMILE, smile some more cause the first photo didn’t turn out
7:02am construction worker is asked to take the photo, but instead joins in the very front of the photo and the group accepts him willingly and puts their arm around him
7:03am straight face photo, I’ve realized that my straight face is similar to the face I make when I eat
7:03am more sweaty hugs
7:08am people lingering and I want to hang out, but I really need to leave
7:20am Okay I got into a really great conversation about this great story from a tribe member who I met last week, now I really have to leave
7:21am hear people yelling goodbye and calling out when the next run group is meeting, I’d like to get in on that, because I hate running alone, I run up and ask. Tuesdays at 7:30 works for me.
9:00am bike by some runners on the street, give them a wave
9:02am waiting in line for coffee, say hi to the person in front me and have the urge to give them a hug and then remember that hugging a stranger is not yet accepted as a social norm
9:15am sitting at my desk, legs are starting to feel a little stiff, sitting probably isn’t the greatest
9:30am goddamn lunges
11:50am refresh NP website to see if the blog is up
12:15pm get up for lunch and having trouble walking down the stairs and bending down to the bottom shelf to get my lunch
12:30pm refresh NP website to see if the blog is up, why is this taking so long
1:10pm Blog is up, photos are up and man, I was pretty sweaty, that was awesome, show colleagues how sweaty I was this morning, tell them what NP is, tell them they should try it out, tell them it’s at 6:29am, colleague walks away. Tell another colleague, colleague says “you’re crazy.” Tell another colleague, “why 6:29am?” you respond: “I don’t know, just cause, it’s kinda random, but it’s great.” Colleague says, “okay, maybe I’ll come join you next week, I’m tired of working out on my own.” You act chill, but in your head you are fired up that they are coming. Send a text to NP friend that you recruited a colleague.
1:20pm do good work at work because that’s important
3:10pm afternoon lull, I’m a bit sleepy, need a little walk, go ask another colleague a “work question”, but somehow slip in that they should come to NP.
3:10-10pm normal day to day things and life that an Ottawa NPer would do
10:00pm Bedtime, I wish it was Tuesday again
Does this sound familiar?
Thank for you sharing your morning, your time and your workout with us. Here’s to bringing “soles” together.
