Guest Post by Dylan Ladds

Before we get into it, Monday’s #DestinationDeck location is downtown. You’ll need the tracker to figure out the location.

Today’s blog post is brought to you by Dylan Ladds from November Project Boston. Dylan and his childhood friend/business partner, Ryan Scura, have been around November Project longer than most leaders and both have a unique view of the tribe. Behind the lens of a camera…

I’m sure most of you have experienced this feeling, and I think there is even a word for it. Recently, I was sitting on a rock with a close friend, talking about everything. For a moment, our attention expanded to the people around us. They all have stories and pasts and experiences that have made them into the person you’re seeing at that moment. Whether the stories are “interesting” is subjective, but they’re just as detailed and complicated as yours. There are a lot of people here.

For those of you who don’t know, my friend Ryan and I make up the team called Dooster. We tell stories through the mediums of video and photography, and for the past four years or so, we’ve been lucky enough to tell stories within the November Project community. Our recent film, Showing Up, brought us to eight different NP tribes. We followed eight individuals who, despite barely knowing us before the first day of shooting, opened their lives in ways that would make you think we were family. When they came downstairs before the workout, we were standing there, in their homes, pointing cameras at them. Creepy? Maybe a little bit, but it’s a small example of the trust and support that exists in this community. And it’s not just these eight people – all of you have supported us immensely. From sharing our videos on social media to organizing and attending the incredible amount of screenings of Showing Up – it all means so much to us, and we couldn’t do it without you.

You can plan as much as you want for a documentary, but for everything you plan, you have to be just as prepared for everything to change. Real life doesn’t pause, and sometimes you have to sprint to keep up (literally). This is one of our challenges as filmmakers, but it’s also what keeps us coming back. There’s a unique rush that comes with capturing a raw, unplanned moment. There’s definitely luck involved, but I think that the more we chase you yahoos around with cameras, the better we get at being in the right place at the right time.

Speaking of the right place at the right time… NPSUMMIT 5.0 is coming up fast, and as with every Summit, Dooster will be there, cameras ready. It’s one of our favorite projects every year, and we’re psyched to capture this NP homecoming weekend. See you in Boston in June. And to get you fired up, here is little Friday morning boost from last year…
