In physics, a wave is an oscillation that transports energy along a medium without transporting matter. Energy is characterized by the amplitude, or the maximum amount of displacement from rest. Now, waves can exhibit some exciting phenomena, much of which is beyond the scope of our discussion; however, the principle of superposition states that two waves that meet while traveling along the same medium result in what’s known as interference. This can be classified as either constructive or destructive, depending on whether they have a similar or opposite displacement at a particular point. Two waves with a positive displacement combine to form a super wave, while those with opposite displacement result in a much smaller amplitude, and may even cancel each other out completely.
I’ve been reflecting on the Bigger Picture a lot recently. What great things are we, as a tribe, doing to effect positive change in our community? The Movement’s mission is simple: we use a simple sense of accountability to motivate and encourage people of all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness levels to get out of their beds and get moving. But what exactly does “get moving” mean?
On the surface, what we do is nothing to write home about. And yet, the ideals for which we stand extend far beyond a punishing workout. November Project fosters community. We uplift and inspire people to go above and beyond that which they believe they’re capable. We encourage each and every person, regardless of their age/race/ability level. We don’t sit back, watching and judging; we’re not about that negative action, boss.
November Project Phoenix is going to begin partnering with local charities to make a legitimate difference in our community. We need your help to do that. Small actions can drive huge effects. Together, we can create a series of ripples in the Phoenix community, which, given the right amplitude and displacement, will form a massive tsunami of positive energy. I want you to drop a brief comment via social media to introduce your favorite local charity, and help us outline a plan to team with them.
Wisconsin Notes
- We’re coming out of it. The headlamps are retreating as the sun begins to peek over the buttes at the end of the workout.
- Bring some people. We love fresh faces.
- What do you guys think about a popup on ASU’s Tempe campus? I agree: it would be EUGE.
- You want to see an amazing example of the awesome power of waves? Check out this video of the Tacoma Narrows bridge. The structure had survived much harder winds than what it experienced that fateful day.
- Today’s playlist was for Kendra, and was aptly called “the Dirty D*ck Rap” playlist. I’ll put together something you’ll enjoy next week, Sheri.
