Five years ago, November Project was born in the depths of a grungy pub in Boston, the brainchild of two larger than life dudes, Bojan and Brogan. Their dedication to meet each other every morning during the month of November to workout, holding each other accountable, lead to the start of a google spreadsheet; The November Project (a lot like how it was The Facebook before it became just Facebook.. Whoa, they’re going to be billionaires. Well, maybe not, this shit is free after all).
They started throwing it out there for others to join them (‘recruiting’) and oddly enough, they had some people show up. Those people made babies and then there were many more people showing up. Then these people outgrew their nest, spread their wings and flew off to other cities, where they planted their own seeds. Seeds of awesomeness that led to the formation of new tribes, and thus the #worldtakeover began.
Five years later, NP is in 7 countries, 32 cities, and thousands of hearts. It is changing the chemistry of the cities we live in. It’s changing the way we interact, the level we hold ourselves at. This morning, I finally tested my hamstring a bit and joined in the entire workout. Because of this, I didn’t get any good pictures to post on the social. But as I was doing the workout, I was thinking ‘who cares?’ I realized for this full hour, no one was on their phone texting or checking the social, they were just working their asses off, interacting, and having a good laugh. Maybe a cheeky vomit? Or crying from the mouth.
It was really refreshing. And yes, the pictures are good to have so other people can see how much fun we have and will then want to join us, but it’s not all about the pictures. It’s about showing up, making connections, working hard and then motivating other people to show up. Some people you’ll try convincing for weeks, months even, and they still won’t try it. When they’re ready for a little NP in their life though, they’ll show up.
Speaking of Showing Up, (great segue, right?), the movie screening is November 20th at Le Garage Cafe. We will meet at The Forks at 8pm, do a 3 to 5 km run, and then go to Le Garage. If you are unable to run, meet us at Le Garage at 8:30pm. We will show the movie around 10pm. You don’t want to miss this night, this is where we reward ourselves for getting up early in the dead of winter. Come for beers and poutine, stay for the company. There might also be some cool slideshows going on in the background.
On Remembrance Day, we will do a pop-up at the Legislative Building (6:14am). None of you have an excuse not to be there as no one works that morning, so we are anticipating a huge turnout. If you’re feeling awesome, you can even run a no frills, no aid stations, no marshals, no time clock, trail half marathon through Winnipeg that evening. Sounds terrible right? It’s not. A few of us did it last year, it was badass. Headlamps are a must (I didn’t have one last year, it made it difficult). Register here.
Kristjana was the recipient of the Shabooya Award. She lives and breathes NP (except for when she’s sleeping in and skipping workouts). She smiles a lot too, which makes people happy.
