After a month-long hiatus, I returned to the tribe today. During my time away, tons of newbies came out for the first time, a baby (about as much of a “newbie” as one can possibly be) joined the tribe, tattoos were obtained, and the 5:30 crew grew fucking massive.
Having the opportunity to step away for a bit made me realize just how important this community is to me in a myriad of ways. The first, and most obvious, is NP’s guarantee that we will get you into shape if you aren’t quite where you want to be or keep pushing your limits if you think you’re already in decent shape. FACT: today’s workout kicked my ass because, while I made an effort to exercise while away, I didn’t have the drive that I have when I’m being pushed by a number of other really fucking fast people.
What I’ve realized — well, realized a long time ago but solidified during my time away — is that this tribe doesn’t just encourage me to be a better athlete; it encourages me to be a better human: to smile more, to hug harder and more often, to welcome any and all people because we all have beautiful stories to tell.
So thank you, tribe, for your “Fuck Yeahs!” and hand hugs, your smiles and hips-in hugs, your Light Street Cafe takeovers and your Foreign-Food-Fridays-on-a-Tuesday-nights. The tribe is strong.
Much love and gratefulness,
